Wood windows

Wood has been at the heart of our products for more than 120 years. Its strength, rigidity, beauty, and thermal performance continue to set our products apart. Find out how we preserve wood’s best qualities by adding various cladding materials for virtually maintenance-free exteriors.

What is clad?

Today's wood windows are actually clad-wood. A clad-wood window or clad-wood door is one that’s made of wood with a protective material covering it on the exterior. All our wood window and door products are clad. The exterior materials we use as claddings are low maintenance and never need repainting. Perma-Shield® cladding, extruded aluminum, and fiberglass composite are the materials we use. Each of these cladding materials offers unique benefits, but all are durable and aesthetically pleasing. They offer the opportunity for beautiful and insulating wood interiors without extra exterior maintenance.

How do wood cladding materials compare?

Strength and durability

Perma-Shield®-clad

Wood’s natural strength combines with the durability of Perma-Shield® cladding for windows and doors you can depend on long-term. Perma-Shield cladding wraps products in a durable, protective shell, helping to offer superior weather resistance.

Extruded-aluminum-clad

Wood’s strength and beauty combined with an extruded aluminum cladding creates a product that’s strong and durable. Heavy-gauge extruded aluminum offers greater structural capabilities and resistance to inclement weather, abrasion, or impact.*

Fiberglass-clad

A timeless wood interior with an exterior cladding of fiberglass composite, plus Fibrex® material where it matters, creates products that are strong, durable, and designed to withstand the toughest conditions like hurricane-force winds and more.

Beautiful aesthetics

Perma-Shield®-clad

With the beauty of wood on the interior, attractive and durable exterior finishes, and availability in classic colors, our Perma-Shield-clad products have timeless appeal.

Extruded-aluminum-clad

With the beauty of a wood interior and a smooth aluminum exterior available in an array of colors, plus anodized finishes, extruded aluminum-clad products are distinctive inside and out.

Fiberglass-clad

With a beautiful wood interior and a variety of frame profiles, it’s possible to authentically complement any architectural styles with our fiberglass-clad products.

Low maintenance

Perma-Shield®-clad

Perma-Shield-clad products never need repainting. The cladding helps repel water, resist dents, and protect the wood inside. Products come with a transferrable limited warranty for 10 years on non-glass components.*

Extruded-aluminum-clad

Extruded aluminum-clad products are virtually maintenance-free. They’re warranted for 10 years against chalking and color change and 20 years against cracking, checking, peeling, flaking, blistering, and loss of adhesion.*

Fiberglass-clad

Fiberglass-clad wood products won’t flake, rot, blister, peel, pit, or corrode.* Plus they’re warranted against corrosion for the life of the products with no washing or waxing required.*

Energy efficiency

Perma-Shield®-clad

Wood provides excellent insulation, which is part of the reason windows were historically made from this material. The Perma-Shield cladding further improves frame and panel efficiency.

Extruded-aluminum-clad

With wood’s excellent insulating abilities and a design incorporating proper thermal breaks, products with this type of cladding won’t cause unwanted energy transfer — so there’s no need to be concerned about aluminum’s conductivity.

Fiberglass-clad

Fiberglass-clad wood products are our most energy efficient. They are tested to our highest thresholds and have glass options that are recognized as ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient in 2025.

How do our wood windows compare to others?

As you begin comparing our clad-wood window options with other options on the market, you're likely to run into a few common  materials. Learn how we use these materials and more nuances that will help you understand our approach.

Vinyl:

Vinyl is a thermally unstable material, which means it’s susceptible to warping and seal failure. This is why we use it solely as a cladding material. Our vinyl cladding is called Perma-Shield® and is used on 200 Series and 400 Series product lines. With a Perma-Shield cladding and wood interior, our 200 Series and 400 Series products aren’t comparable to all-vinyl products. Look instead to our composite 100 Series line for products competitive with all-vinyl options.

Which type of cladding is best?

While the cladding material matters, it’s important to remember that it doesn’t exist in isolation. How and where the cladding is applied, or, in other words, how the window is designed, is just as important. When materials and design are combined well, like in our products, they support the performance and aesthetics of the finished product and help to improve longevity. We know how to put the right materials in the right places to make quality clad-wood windows and doors — we pioneered the process more than 50 years ago.

Using a variety of cladding materials helps us offer product lines that meet various price points without sacrificing quality. Here’s a side-by-side comparison of our clad-wood options so you can see how price shifts with the offerings available.
